It occured to me earlier, photography may well be the most precious invention of the last 200 years. Electricity .. Incredible, but that's just adapting to a new way of living Flight, bof, internal combustion engine, sort of ditto. It's better than flight as it's something we can easily benefit from for real needs (not fukcing about on a beach during 1st dioc lockdowns - Piers Morgan). It's given us bulldozers, cars etc. but it's just stuff that we adapt to. Pain killers. We had pain killers before. Not as good and painkillers are up there with internal combustion engine and electricity when you're at a dentist. But an image of something you captured or was captured by someone else is something people in the past would have actually missed not having. They didn't miss electricity, or planes or cars, but they did used to paint pictures of loved ones, have profile siloettes of loved ones. If you'd offered them a car they'd have said bah... not sure. Offered them a camera and a roll of film and instructions on how to process the film, they'd have jumped at it and quickly become as rich as the Rothschilds were in the process of becoming. Even though we take still photography for granted somewhat today it's still something would not give up, . .. People willingly give up on 'modern inventions and go off grid (at least while under 75) but burn all your photos and never take another?? People would say no, ... 'there's no point' being their initial reason to not do so. This is why house fires are so devestating. All we have is memory and photos of memories.
